The Schwinn Bicycle Company was founded by German-born mechanical engineer Ignaz Schwinn (1860–1945) in Chicago in 1895. It became the dominant manufacturer of American bicycles through most of the 20th century and today it is a sub-brand of Pacific Cycle. Ignaz Schwinn was born in Germany in 1860 and worked on two-wheeled ancestors of the modern bicycle that appeared in 19th century Europe. Schwinn emigrated to the United States in 1891.

In 1895, with the financial backing of fellow German American Adolph Frederick William Arnold, he founded Arnold, Schwinn & Company. Schwinn’s new company coincided with a sudden bicycle craze in America. Chicago became the center of the American bicycle industry, with thirty factories turning out thousands of bikes every day. Bicycle output in the United States grew to over a million units per year by the turn of the 19th to 20th century.

The bicycle boom was short-lived, as automobiles and motorcycles quickly replaced bikes on American streets. By 1905, bicycle annual sales had fallen to only 25% of that reached in 1900. Many smaller companies were absorbed by larger firms or went bankrupt; in Chicago, only twelve bicycle makers remained in business. Competition became intense, both for parts suppliers and for contracts from the major department stores, which retailed the majority of bicycles produced in those days.

Hawthorne Bicycles | USA

1935 Ward Hawthorne Duralium Bicycle
1935 Ward Hawthorne Duralium Bicycle

Hawthorne brand bicycles were sold through the Montgomery Ward stores. Most of the bicycles offered by Montgomery Ward were fairly generic, however there were some exceptions. The 1939 Hawthorne Zep was an exclusive design, and so was the 1940-41 Hawthorne All-American, designed by famous industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague. Most Hawthornes were manufactured by either the Cleveland Welding Company whos own brand was Roadmaster, or H.P. Snyder, makers of Rollfast bicycles.

The 1936 Hawthorne Zep model featured black and white paint with a tiny red pinstripe. These bicycles also had one of the first baskets connected to the handlebars. One outstanding feature of the 1936 Hawthorne Bicycle built especially for women was a unique lacing around the rear wheel to prevent long skirts from becoming entangled in the wheel spokes. This bicycle also had a totally aluminum frame making it easy for young ladies both to ride and to handle.

I am offering a vintage 1947 Monark bicycle. This is a yellow/green bicycle. It screams art deco. It has a basket on the front and a rack on the back. The paint is all original. The tires are in really bad shape but they are a size 26×2.125 and can be replaced. The sprocket to the seat is 18″. The paint has seen better days but the fact that its original makes up for it. This is such a neat bike, and it would make an incredible addition to any collection. Bid today and get it for a great price.

Haro Bikes | Vintage BMX and Mountain Bicycles

Bob Haro | 1982
Bob Haro | 1982

Haro Bikes Corporation, as it is now known, is an American BMX and Mountain bicycle manufacturer. The company was founded in 1978 by Bob Haro.Haro started out producing numberplates for BMX bikes in his Home. Demand for these stylish plates quickly outgrew his one man capacity. Haro Designs, the first name of the company, was formed in 1980 with headquarters in Torrance, California. While the company was growing, Haro was also growing the sport of freestyle BMX. He travelled around the country performing demos of radical trick riding that had not been seen anywhere before. As a result, Haro earned the title “The Father of Freestyle”. During the early eighties, the company grew rapidly by expanding its product line and establishing national and international distribution. The BMX boom was in full swing and the company built a reputation for developing innovative, top-of-the-line BMX and freestyle bikes and accessories. Haro Bikes’ most popular BMX/Freestyle models were the Master and the Sport.

Bob Haro Artwork
Bob Haro Artwork

There aren’t too many people who have contributed as much to BMX as Bob Haro. Aside from practically inventing Freestyle riding and founding one of the most successful companies in the sports history, Bob’s illustrations were a popular feature of numerous BMX publications during the 70′s and 80′s.

BMX Skills in the 1980´s
BMX Skills in the 1980´s

Haro introduced its first successful line of Freestyle BMX bikes in 1983. The Haro Sport and Master were the company’s flagship bikes that sparked a revolution in bicycle design and imitation across the industry by other companies. In that year, its revenue greatly took off and it ignited a huge cult following. In 1984, the company added the FST to its product line-up for consumers with lower budgets. As a result of Haro’s huge success, companies like Hutch, Diamond Back, GT, Schwinn, Redline, Dyno, CW and Skyway modeled their own frame versions after Haro’s designs. During the 80s, GT became Haro’s strongest competitor. However, because of Haro’s huge profits from the Sport, GT’s sales dwindled in comparison.

Miyata | Japanese Bicycle and Unicycle Manufacturer

Miyata Badge
Miyata Badge

Miyata is a Japanese bicycle and unicycle manufacturer that has been in operation since 1892. Miyata claims to have been the first Japanese manufacturer of flash-butt welded frame tubes (1946) and the first to use electrostatic painting (1950). Miyata was founded by Eisuke Miyata, a gunsmith employed by the Hitachi Kuni Kasama Clan. Miyata built Japan’s first conventional, modern bicycle at the Miyata Gun Factory in 1892.

Miyata Bicycle circa 1890
Miyata Bicycle circa 1890

He recognized the future of gun manufacturing in Japan was not strong, and got the idea for a new bike design after being asked by a foreigner to repair a conventional bicycle. Unlike modern-day bicycles, it was built from proprietary tubing in the same factory where guns were made. The tubing was bored out lengthwise using a round steel rod, mean the inside of the tube is rifled like a gun barrel. Many say Miyata pioneered triple butting, and revolutionized frame building techniques. The first Miyata’s were bolt-upright town bikes. Over the decades, Miyata established a good foothold in the bicycle market, becoming contracted by multiple local brands to build their bicycles and ultimately attracting Panasonic Corporation to become a shareholder in 1959.

Panasonic Corporation, for a period the manufacturer of National and Panasonic brand bicycles, had been Miyata’s largest shareholder since its 1959, selling its remaining stake in Miyata in 2008. The Miyata brand still exists and, while it is no longer distributed in the United States, it remains popular in Europe under the Dutch “Koga-Miyata” brand. As of 2008, there is limited availability of Koga-Miyata bicycles in North America.

Raleigh Bicycle Company

Irish Raleigh Heron Badge
Irish Raleigh Heron Badge

The Raleigh Bicycle Company is a bicycle manufacturer originally based in Nottingham, UK. It is one of the oldest bicycle companies in the world. From 1921 to 1935 Raleigh also produced motorcycles and three-wheel cars, leading to the formation of the Reliant Company. Raleigh’s history started in 1887, in Raleigh Street, Nottingham. Frank Bowden, a prosperous 38-year-old, bought a bicycle made by Messrs. Woodhead, Angois and Ellis, because his doctor had told him to ride a bicycle for his health. Bowden was impressed by his bicycle and went to Raleigh Street to find the makers. Woodhead, Angois and Ellis were making three bikes a week. In six years Bowden created a business which became the biggest bicycle manufacturing company in the world and occupied seven and a half acres in Faraday Road, Lenton, Nottingham.

In 1930 the company acquired the rights to the Ivy Karryall, a motorcycle fitted with a cabin for cargo and a hood for the driver. Raleigh’s version was called the Light Delivery Van and had a chain drive. A two-passenger version was followed by Raleigh’s first three-wheel car, the Safety Seven. After World War II, Raleigh became known for its lightweight sports roadster bicycles, often using Sturmey-Archer three and five-speed transmissions. These cycles were considerably lighter and quicker than either the old heavy English utility roadster or the American “balloon-tire” cruiser bikes. In 1946, Raleigh and other English bicycle manufacturers accounted for 95% of the bicycles imported into the United States. Raleigh’s sports roadster, or English racer bicycles were exported around the world, including the United States.

The company continued to increase imports to the United States until 1955, when a rate increase in foreign bicycle tariffs caused a shift in imports in favour of bicycles from West Germany and Holland. However, this proved only a temporary setback, and by 1964, Raleigh was again a major selling brand in the U.S. bicycle market. The Raleigh Chopper was launched in Canada June 1969 as a children’s bicycle. It went on sale in the UK in 1970 and sold well, and was a key factor in reviving the company’s fortunes. The Chopper featured a 3-speed Sturmey-Archer gear hub, shifted using a top-tube mounted gear lever reminiscent of the early Harley-Davidson shifter – one of its “cool” features.

Benjamin Bowden Bicycles | Maker of the Spacelander

Bowden Spacelander
Bowden Spacelander

British born Benjamin Bowden originally designed the futurist Spacelander bicycle for the “Britain Can Make It” exhibition in 1946. Conceived in aluminum, the dynamic form featured a direct drive hub dynamo that stored the downhill energy and released it on uphill runs. The originally prototype for the exhibit was hand-made by the MG Auto Company. Due to the expense of manufacture, the bike did not go into production until 1960, when Bomard Industries of Grand Haven, Michigan contracted with Bowden to create the finished product. The final design was produced in fiberglass and built-in headlight and taillights were added. Ultimately, Bomard Industries went of business and only 522 examples were ever produced.

1946 Bowden Spacelander Prototype

“What a looker, this streamlined curvilinear monocoque fiberglass bicycle was originally designed in 1946 by British-born American auto and bicycle designer Benjamin G. Bowden (1907–1998). Fourteen years later in 1960 it finally went into production but not for long; therefore, making these gems extremely rare and all the more desirable. The Spacelander weighs in at a hefty 50 pounds; it has a push button electric horn, electric headlights and tail lights—all powered by D cell batteries. The original model was also fitted with an electric motor that “gathered energy on the downhill and flat terrain and helped the rider climb hills. A number of bicycle manufacturers rejected the Spacelander as too exotic for mass marketing. But in recent years, collectors have paid as much as $15,000 for an example in good condition.” (NYT)

Detail

You could be the proud owner of this vintage one-of-a-kind used Bowden Spacelander bicycle. Originally designed by the famed Ben Bowden; the MG manufactured Spacelander made it’s debut at the “Britain Can Make It” trade exhibition of 1946. After years of searching for a manufacturer the Spacelander finally reached a very limited production run in 1960, executed by Bomard Industries of Muskegon MI of 522 bikes (this number is unconfirmed but frequently sourced as the total production run). It is rumored that Bomard was forced out of business in this year by a lady who claimed she was injured on one of their vibrating chairs (a couple of sources site this as the cause, but there is no documentation; either way it’s a fun story). The bicycles frame was entirely manufactured of fiberglass, with a silky smooth finish showing off the fibers used in construction. A marvel of mid-century post war aerospace design, this bicycle is a must-have for any collector.

Detail

This Spacelander is in overall decent condition. The fiberglass frame remains mostly intact, the notable exceptions are at the non-driveside axle drop out where a portion of the fiberglass has cracked of where a metal bracket formerly was. The drive side axle drop out is also missing the metal bracket however there is no apparent damage to the frame of the bike. There is some cracking and scratching present at the mounting point of the rear tail lamps. The front head lamps and fender are in good shape although in regards to all lights we are uncertain if they are still functional.

Detail

The “Outer Space Blue” color isn’t too heavily faded (very common in the “Stop Sign Red”) but does have some light brown discoloration to it. The handlebars are not original although we have seen vintage photos of Bowdens with this style of handlebars and grips (both grips are cracked and will need replacement if you intend to ride this bike). We’re uncertain if the Troxel saddle is original or not. The whitewall tires, rear rack and pedals are original. Serial plate is present beneath the saddle along the uppermost chromed ridge of the frame and reads “Bomard Industries, Inc…Kansas City, Missouri…U.S. Patent No., 2,537,325 Canadian Patent No. 1951…Serial No. B 010218″. Finally, one of the mounting bolts around the crankset is missing. This bicycle has not been tuned by our shops mechanics but appears to be operational as is. This bike is being sold as is, please see photographs for details.

NOTE: We would highly advise local pick up of this bicycle due to the age and fragile nature as well the price. We will ship frieght in a large wooden crate and pack to the best of our ability but make no guarantees on it’s condition upon arrival if shipped. All bikes are professionally boxed and will be partially broken down to fit size requirements for shipping, some assembly and tuning may be required upon receiving.

This listing has ended.

Detail

This vintage bicycle shows normal signs of use and has scuffs, scratches, stains, chipped and faded paint. There is also some sureface rust in places. The seat post is very rusty and has been welded to the seat bracket on the underside. It looks like someone lost the original seat bracket or an adaptor, so they welded the post to the bracket. You could change out the seat post and/or bracket to make it right. The bicycle does not have a kickstand and the headbadge is missing.

Detail

The front tire is very cracked and does not hold air. The front wheel has a lot of rust and chipped paint. One of the wheels may not be original, the front wheel has a red stripe and the back wheel is white with no stripe. The back tire holds air and is in good shape. The bolt that holds the handlebars on is bent and may not be original. It still tightens down and holds the handlebars tight. Both fenders have some dents and there is a large dent in the front fender.

Detail

The banana seat has only a few small tears on the underside edge, but otherwise is in very good shape. This is a very unique design by Monark, the tank can be moved to make the bike a boys or girls bike. For shipping I will remove the pedals, handlebars and one or both of the wheels. I will also remove the sissy bar brackets because they are too wide for the box. I could not ride the bicycle with the flat tire, but I did bench test it and the wheels turn good and the brakes work. Overall this vintage Monark bicycle is in good condition and will make an excellent addition to your collection.

Terry Precision Cycling Bicycles | USA

Terry Precision´s Valkyrie Tour
Terry Precision´s Valkyrie Tour

Terry Precision Cycling was founded in 1985 by Georgena Terry, a mechanical engineer who traded in a career at Xerox for her real passion-designing and building bicycles. Terry started building frames in her basement for herself and friends who couldn’t find bicycles that fit properly. After selling out of the bikes she’d built and taken to a trade show, Terry Precision Bicycles for Women was born. Terry’s mission from day one was to make cycling as much fun as possible for women through better, innovative product design. Twenty four years later, Terry is credited with having pioneered the women’s cycling industry.

In addition to transforming bicycles for women, Terry revolutionized the bicycle saddle industry with cutting-edge designs offering tremendous relief to riders of both sexes and all levels. Bicycle apparel for women also proved successful with products designed by Terry and manufactured in the United States including jerseys, shorts, gloves and the widely popular Skorts for cycling. Adding to her list of entrepreneurial endeavors, Terry developed the first catalog and website devoted exclusively to women’s cycling products. A national network of Terry customers are evangelists for the company and its products.

Sunbeam Bicycles

Sir Edward Elgar and one of his Sunbeams.
Sir Edward Elgar and one of his Sunbeams.

Sunbeam was a British manufacturing marque that produced bicycles and motorcycles from 1912 to 1956. John Marston was a perfectionist, and this was reflected in the high build-quality of the Sunbeam bicycle, which had an enclosure around the drive chain in which an oil bath kept the chain lubricated and clean. They were made until 1936. The Sunbeam was designed to last a gentleman a lifetime and such is their longevity that models a century old still have their original finish, chain and transmission. The top model was the “Golden”, with alloy wheel-rims, epicyclic two- and three-speed gears and real gold-leaf pin-striping. The “Royal” was of the same quality but had red lining and simpler equipment. Sunbeam is perhaps most famous for its S7 model, a balloon-tyred shaft-drive motorcycle with an ohv in-line twin engine. The company began making bicycles and, on the suggestion of his wife Ellen, Marston adopted the trademark brand “Sunbeam”. Consequently, the Paul Street works were called “Sunbeamland”.

John Marston
John Marston

Sunbeam bicycles (always “The Sunbeam”) were made in Wolverhampton from 1887 to 1937. As the factory was used to sheet-metal working and japanning (the Victorian equivalent of today’s oven-baked enamel or ‘powder coating’) the construction of cycles presented few problems. At first of similar design to other makers’ machines, the company adopted a version of Harrison Carter’s Little oil-bath chaincase in the mid-1890s. The cycle was re-designed so that the oil contained in the oilbath lubricated the bottom bracket, chain and rear hub, the only cycle so designed to date. Three Sunbeam motorcycle models were produced from 1946 to 1956, inspired by BMW motorcycles supplied to the Wehrmacht during the Second World War. They were followed by two scooter models from 1959 to 1964.

As with many consumer products, early bicycles were purchased solely for their usefulness or fashionableness and discarded as they wore out or were replaced by newer models. Some items were thrown into storage and survived, but many others went to the scrapyard. Decades later, those with an interest in cycling and history began to seek out older bikes, collecting different varieties. Like other forms of collecting, bike collectors can be completists or specialists, and many have extensive holdings in bike parts or literature, in addition to complete bicycles. Read more…

Detail

A very rare and original Schwinn Grey Ghost Sting-Ray bike!! We are not bike experts but as far as we can tell we believe all parts are original to this bike (but please see photos to confirm, some parts may have been added-front light). This bike comes exactly as we found it from a local estate. According to the serial number (LG065077) the bike was made in November 1971.

Detail

The Grey Ghost is the rarest of the Krate series and was only in production for one year. The bike was originally equipped with Schwinn’s famous five speed Stik-Shift, front spring forks, rear shock absorbers, bucket seat and front drum brake. This is your chance to own a truly special bicycle!

Detail

We are recommending local pickup for this piece if possible. It would be very expensive and damage would be hard to avoid. We will be traveling to Massachusetts and Pennsylvania in the Spring and Fall (read below), so arrangements can be made if you would like to meet us to pick it up. Buy it now on eBay!

  • Size and Makeup: About 55” long and 44” tall to the top f the handle bars (as pictured). Made of metal.
  • Condition: As far as we can tell bike is fully functional with working brakes, shifter, and chain. The back tire does not hold air but the front tire is in good shape. There is one small puncture mark on the seat. The logos are in good condition. A few light marks and signs of aging as can be expected to the metal parts of the bike. Considering age and use it is really in remarkable shape.
  • Markings: Schwinn Sting-Ray “Grey Ghost”. Serial #: LG065077

Vintage 1941 Monark Silver King Rocket steel 26x bicycle. This bicycle frame is almost an exact copy of the amazing aluminum 26x, but in steel. And like most of the twinbars, it has been re-welded where the drive-side chainstay meets the bottom bracket and also on the top tube 3 inches back from the head tube. These steel twinbars are extremely rare, even more rare than the 26x which it greatly resembles. This Rocket has a cheaper spec than the 26x though – basic front hub, no front brake, standard steel Gothic fenders (not stainless or chromed). This bicycle also has the original paint – a black and cream that even has some of the original red pin-striping still visible in spots. There is quite a bit of rust on the rear rack (which isn’t stock). The original aluminum head badge is in great shape.

  • New Departure hubs, front and rear laced to drop center rims. The rims are in nice condition with decent paint. The rims are painted cream with a red pinstripe. The red pinstripe matches the frame.
  • The original spring fork works but is missing one of the original top nuts.
  • The front fender light is in rough shape: broken lens, lots of rust, not working.
  • The Alstate Safety tires are cracked and don’t hold air. Most likely not original.
  • Crankset with Monark chain ring and dogleg drive side arm are in good shape – scratched, but nice shape. Pedals are rideable but should be replaced.
  • The original Messinger Deluxe springer leather seat needs to be restored – the cover has torn off and needs to be restitched.
  • This rocket has the original stem and handlebar but is missing some chrome and also the stem bolt.
  • With small bit of work this bike would make a great rider but is definitely worth a full restoration. The rarity of the bike makes this extremely collectible.

Sold for 1.000 USD

You are bidding on a 1980′s Vintage Raleigh Team Pro. This bike has been repainted by Ron Cooper in the UK to it’s correct original Team colors. It also has new transfers applied to create a stunning example of this famous bike used by the Raleigh Team back in the late 70′s to early 80′s. It also has the upgraded, extremely light Reynolds 753 tube set used through out. Main frame as well as forks. It measures 56cm square. 56cm top tube and a 56cm seat tube. Measurements are center to center.

It has Campagnolo Super Record components throughout except for the shifters which are lovely Simplex ones, (nicer than Campy IMHO). Seat post is made by Shimano Dura Ace, seat is a Selle Royal Turbo leather. Pedals and brakes are Campy Super Record also. Bar and stem by Cinelli. Rims are by Mavic SSC, and are made for tubulars tires. Not sure of tire brand but they hold air and work fine. You couldn’t ask for a much nicer example of this classic collectable vintage racing machine, especially constructed with Reynolds 753 tubing.

1938-39 MONARK SilverKing BUILT “5 BAR” SUPER FRAME WARDS HAWTHORNE TWIN-BAR MODEL BICYCLE This is a very nicely painted, Extremely Rare Monark style 5-bar Super Frame model. This bike is partially restored. The paint is tastefully done and a few parts have already been rechromed. The saddle has a nice original top. The pedals are nice. The wheels and handlebars are decent original but still need to be rechromed. The front-loader headlite needs some minor repair.

Detail
Detail

This is one of the very RAREST of the steel frame Monark built bicycles and there are only just a very few known! Sometimes marketed through Montgomery Wards catalogs as a Wards Hawthorne Twin-Bar model. There are actually 5 bars extending back from the head post. The 2 lower bars actually sweep “under” and cradle the crank housing. The upper frame bars wrap around and extend past the seatpost downtube and flow down to the rear axel. The entire frame is very unique and quite streamlined. The rear drop-stand is a nice double-braced model. This Extremely Rare Wards Hawthorne Twin-bar / Monark 5-bar bicycle is being sold ‘as is’ with a very low starting price and NO RESERVE!

2012 | Colnago celebrates his 80th birthday with a limited edition bike. Ernesto Colnago is 80 today and has celebrated his birthday with a special limited edition bike that is set to become a collectors’ item. The special bike is called the C59 Ottanta – which means eighty in Italian and has a gold finish. It was inspired by the iconic Colnago bikes of the past that were used so successfully by so many legendary professional riders and loved by thousands of cyclists around the world.

Detail

The C59 Ottanta has Master-like arabesque lug decorations and Ernesto Colnago’s signature, yet is made from the best possible carbon fibre and fitted with Campagnolo Super Record EPS 11s electronic components. Colnago is known for its iconic ace of clubs logo but the C59 Ottanta has a special head badge: the original ‘Eagle and Arrow’ logo that was created in 1954 inspired by a headline in the local newspaper that described Colnago as fast as an arrow when he won a race.

Just 80 examples of this very special limited edition bike will be made and 20 have already been snapped up by collectors around the world. Despite turning 80, Colnago was busy in his office in Cambiago, preferring to work than celebrate his birthday. He is still the first to arrive at the Colnago offices, just across the street from his home and is always the last to leave. Most people are happily retired at 80 but Colnago does not intend to retire just yet. “My 80th birthday is an intermediate sprint, it’s the not the finish of my race. I still love to work and create new bikes. I don’t want a cake or a big party, the special bike is my way of sharing my birthday,” he said.

The bike is new, never installed pedals, has the guarantee of Colnago, it is unique because it was built in the traditional measurement is not sloping. The bike is delivered with: water bottle, pockets for wheels, the picture frame warranty is Sterling Silver signed by Mr Colnago and battery charger.

  • Seat tube (Center to Top) = 54 cm (Colnago SizingTraditional)
  • Top tube (Center to Center) = 54 cm
  • Rear spacing = 130 mm
  • Stand over height = 78 cm
